A Slight Deviation: X-Wing

A few weeks ago I had the guys over and rather than do our typical WW2 skirmishing in the Eastern Front we decided to do some X-Wing. We had three playing so we selected a scenario involving mercs and rebels. Great opportunity for me to try out my fish eye lens.

Playing Amongst the Asteroids!

What do you get when you rub two sticks together mixed with rocks?

A game of the new XWing amidst an asteroid field, that's what!

Hi everyone! My apologies for not posting sooner. I've been getting as much gaming while getting acclimated to a new employment contract. Not an excuse - just a fact. It was a toss up between gaming and blogging. WWYD? Game, I hope.

In the meanwhile here's some shots of a game day last month playing with the new XWing and my latest asteroids acquisitions I blogged about in 'roids: quick and easy! (http://thehistoricalminiaturist.blogspot.com/2012/10/roids-quick-and-easy.html)

I'm gonna let the pix speak for themselves.

Coming soon. More historical action using the Command and Colors system paired up with minis.

'roids: quick and easy!

Asteroids, Meteroids, 'roids, all the same. Bits of rock in space. Cool terrain to model for any space minis game. Two options: make it myself or buy.

I'm sure most of you are familiar with this iconic Asteroids screen.

Beautifully rendered 'roids done in CG.

Ditto.

The first option was to make it myself and since i'm a DIY kinda gamer I was gonna do just that. Take a bunch of unused Styrofoam popcorn and modify, sculpt, chip, carve, cut, burn...

Yeah, right...

But what's better than making your own asteroids?  Buying readily made stuff from the crazy knuckleheads at www.spacejunkstore.com.

What's not to like about these 'roids?
Shown here with some EM4 Universal Spacecraft.
I was at the Houston Beer and Pretzles monthly event (http://beerandpretzel.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=164081400) when they were featuring Battlestar Gallactica night. Then with jaw dropping suddenness I spied a set of asteroids being used on the table. Man, I was hooked. So i ordered a whole bunch to use for some space gaming.

Godzilla and Asteroids!

Ahhhh... late spring and almost summer, at last...
The pause that refreshes. No coke in this cocktail
to spoil the pure, dark rum goodness. As contemplate
my drink whilst basking in the sun in my backyard,
it hit me. Egad, shouldn't I be blogging...
After a looong absence and a break from travelling, I felt the need to get back into the swing of things with my much, alas, neglected blog. Without getting into any details suffice it to say that life gets in the way of the more important things: lusting after miniatures, collecting (or amassing) new miniatures, painting your miniatures and playing with your miniatures. Of course, not necessarily in that order.

I was fortunate enough to be able to attend one of our local Houston gaming events held this past April 14-15 in New Caney a tad north of H-town.

I got to sample a few wacky games. Two of them are worth mentioning because one) someone finally made this game that I dreamt of after seeing Monsterpocalypse and being disgusted by this wanna-be and two) this other game got my imaginative juices flowing and will put me back on the road to creative pursuits (i.e. making terrain).

BBG will do a much better review that I can so read all about it here:  http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/38694/godzilla-kaiju-world-wars
First up is Godzilla: Kaiju World Wars. Now this boardgame, that comes with *gasp* ubercool miniatures is truly after my own heart. This no gimmicky, ripoff, collectible, miniatures game, thankyouverymuch! This is the real deal with the original Japanese monsters and every thang!! Andy Blozinski hosted and ran the game for 6 of us lucky and wacky gamers.

I got to play as Godzilla with Mecha Godzilla in the background!

Like some gamers (myself included), Andy supplemented the original game with added 3d components for the eye-candylicious 'look and feel' that counters just can't do justice to (e.g. jets, APCs and tanks). Some of you might recognize the ubiquitous Gale Force Nine flame markers, as well. To be fair, the original game comes with four pre-painted, drool worthy miniatures, the iconic: Godzilla, Gigan, Rodan and King Ghidorah (better known as the 3 headed, long necked dragon from Monster Zero). It's ready to be played right outta  the box. Then Andy (God bless 'im) found and included Mothra and Mecha Godzilla to this monstrous rogues gallery for the ultimate showdown and city bashing destruct-fest!

This is more like it. Pick a monster and be
the monster. Fight with the puny tanks and
jets of the Japanese Self Defense Forces, other

Monsters and wreck Tokyo! Oh no!!
A few games later Mike brought out Full Thrust. This is an old miniature game set in space that's simple and fun and reminded me a little of Silent Death. Incidentally, many of you know my obsession with eye candy on the gaming table. I mention this b/c we played this game as a test lo those many months ago and without a star map as shown below, I just couldn't get into it. What a difference a star map makes...
Mike West's EM4 space ships on a
star map by Hotz Mats.
So the part that got me (which isn't pictured above) was a planet and asteroid field that Mike added to this mat thereby enhancing my gaming experience. Four of us played with a pair of ships each and within an hour only two ships remained amongst a litter of space debris and wreckage floating against a backdrop of asteroids...

As I pictured this, I then decided to make some
asteroids for a quick and easy project. Main
reason being: start creating again.

Asteroids coming soon to a space mat near you...

Alien Attack!!

A slight deviation and a short break from my historical path(ology)...

Gaming with flying saucers is another area I've always wanted to delve in. Again, I'm going out with myself but the reference to the earlier, vintage era of 1950-60's SciFi films is again being invoked. There's a great collection out there of examples to get you all fired up. One of the many being "Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers".

Revamped movie poster for DVD

Another pre-CG Ray Harryhausen masterpiece
Alas, Mars Attacks! was an utter and typical Hollywood disappointment saved only by it's special FX and not by much, either. :(

Of course, those Hollywood morons thought that an A-list cast would more than make up for it's sucky plot ad nauseum. Barf!
Last year at Mag Con 2 I happened upon a wacky game that was truly in line with my kind of beer n pretzel / wacky gaming. I sat down at a demo and was hooked. The minis were Reaper with game designed by Frontline Games (www.frontline-games.com)

Box Cover Art
The Earthlings that's aptly renamed from the original rules set.
Left to right: Scout Master Willy (aka LTL Dad) and his three sons: Nick, Gabe and AJ

The Aliens: from left to right: Cheezo, Addar and Bob (original names from the rules set)

The object of the game is to ensure that the Aliens don't abduct the Earthlings. Played on a 24" x 24" mat and uses a card deck activation system. Eventually, I'll substitute this saucer for the one I have on order from Pegasus Hobbies.

Of course, I'll have to paint these guys green.
Meanwhile, back to historical minis...
